Last night I tried a couple of things. I also used the windows update troubleshooter. The good news is that I can now get into Windows in normal mode. The bad news is that it's taking minutes to load up.

This was similar to the problem I had earlier just before I refreshed. In safe mode and diagnostic mode, Windows loaded up quickly, but for some reason things startup slowed down in normal mode. Initially, even after loading up, Windows moved extremely slowly. Then I uninstalled AVG antivirus, and things immediately sped up for some reason with all services running but no startup programs running.

This morning, I tried running all startup programs, and once again Windows startup slowed down to minutes, although after that, the computer seemed fine I should emphasize "seem. I'll try to figure out which program is causing the slowdown my guess is the Zonealarm firewall , but I do want to note that I never had any of these problems until I tried the update several days ago.

Question 1: Is there any reason why AVG and possibly zonealarm would cause problems after a failed Windows update install? Question 2: What would cause restore points to disappear? I noticed one suggested solution saying to try to disable all services except the Microsoft ones, because if you disable the Microsoft ones, the restore points might be deleted. I kept the Microsoft ones clicked, disabled the others, and rebooted, but my restore points still disappeared.

Would diagnostic mode or safe mode cause restore points to disappear? I'll try to send any event logs after I get home. Final note: in my windows update screen, it has all the failed installs saying it's "pending reboot" but unfortunately or maybe fortunately it isn't installing.

I'm not sure what to do about that assuming everything else gets cleared up and my system starts running smoothly again. In reply to BKSteeler's post on January 23, Hi, Thank you for keeping us updated about the issue.
